Incongruities and Observations

7 Days is a daily tabloid that comes to us every day from the humming metropolis of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. They are kind enough to have put a stand where faculty, staff and students can grab a copy as we are moving about campus. I have noticed a trend in the way they design the cover of this publication: shocking headline on the left, light hearted slice-of-life photo on the right. I have wanted to write about this and show an example for quite a while and today I had the time and 7 Days provided the opportunity.

The headline is referring to a robbery in which the bandits crashed through a mall in a stolen car and into a jewelry store, jumped out of the car, grabbed a bunch of jewelry from the smashed cases and fled on foot. The image is of three young Iranian girls who have just built a snowman. So on first glance while waking by one might think “Why are those poor girls on trial for building a snowman!?” This happens all the time and is usually quite entertaining.

Iit also reminded me of a post I read on Speak Up about a similar kind of juxtaposition that happens with a Tiffany’s ad and a news story. The mysterious M. Kingsley has written about the phenomena much more eloquently than I ever could. I highly recommend the article.

So the moral of the story is keep your eyes open. You never know what you might see.
